This program was started in 2006 by the cooperation of Hanoi University of Science and Technology and JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency established under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) as an ODA (Official Development Assistance) project. An official department was set up in the university, with the aim of "Training IT Human Resources with Japanese Speaking Capabilities." Sun* took over the program in 2016, and since then, developed our own curriculum and expanded the program to other universities. We provide Japanese lessons and practical IT knowledge annually to 1,500 students aiming to work for Japanese companies.

Our unique curriculum and ecosystem
fosters talent capable of contributing from day one

Since its establishment, Sun * has provided support to its clients, from start-ups to established businesses, and for new business creation as well as promoting Digital Transformation (DX). Building on our knowledge base, and in collaboration with educational institutions, we have developed a unique curriculum to foster talent capable of contributing from day one. We have created an ecosystem where we develop human resources through industry-university collaboration, and offer recruitment support services to companies wishing to hire such developed talent.

How We Develop Talent Capable of Contributing from Day One

Multiple Programming Languages
Following C and Java basic programming courses, students will move on to learning scripting languages (PHP, Ruby, Python, Javascript). Contrary to many Japanese universities, where students only attend courses on C and Java, our curriculum includes courses on scripting languages so that students will be familiar with such languages used for new businesses and DX promotion.

Focus on Actual Practice
In order to develop talent capable of contributing from day one, in addition to lessons, actually putting the knowledge into actual practice is key. Our curriculum focuses on gaining practical experience such as on database, compiler, web programming, architecture and network programming.

Long-term Internships
Japanese universities tend to conduct short-term internships during the summer vacation, but our curriculum requires students to undergo a minimum of 3 months internship for which some universities award students with graduation points. Students deepen their understanding of running projects through the longer practical experience working at companies.

Mock Experiment Lessons from Active Engineers
Sun*'s IT Japanese programs are conducted by active Japanese IT engineers, PMs and consultants, to allow students to experience mock experiments on concepts such as Project Management, Agile and Scrum. Unlike common Japanese classes, our Japanese IT courses concentrate on IT and Japanese used in the workplace.

Sun*'s Mock Experiments

Students take on the role of either a purchaser or contractor, and form a purchaser/contractor team. The purchaser conveys the order specification and the contractor will develop this with Ruby on Rails using Scrum methodology. By experiencing the flow from defining order specification to final delivery, students gain insight on the perspectives of both purchasers and contractors.

The program is delivered as an official course (department) of the university. In addition to regular IT faculty courses, students are required to take classes provided by Sun* in Japanese on the Japanese language as well as IT, and must pass Japanese Language Proficiency Test N3 in order to achieve graduation. Therefore, students enroll on this course and study hard, aiming to work in Japan. At present, this is the only available official IT university course for students aiming to seek employment in Japan.

Successful Recruitment/Client Feedback
We interview companies that gave job offers and the recruited students. The following is some of the feedback we received on why they used our services, and how the hired students are faring in their assigned jobs after coming to work in Japan.

LIXIL Corporation

Core System Management Department, Mr. Hieu

Tech enthusiast with excellent communication skill. Currently working as a BrSE of a global development team.
"He came to Japan in April 2020 and is actively working as a member on the server side of our quotation system, which is the base of our business. The tasks are mostly updating the infrastructure, middleware, and programming languages of the 10 year old system, and migrating it to cloud. He is an essential member as the BrSE on our side of a development team consisting of over 50 members including our external partner's development site in Vietnam. Having a reliable BrSE on the team helps our understanding of the required specifications, and has contributed to smooth communication with our partner, as well as improvement of quality and progress. He has a cheerful personality enhancing the workplace atmosphere."

Open House Corporation

AI Engineer Mr. Thao

With the use of AI/RPA, achieved reduction of internal processes equivalent to 25,700 hours
"Because of the difficulty in recruiting AI engineers from the domestic market, we came up with the idea to hire a new graduate from overseas. Mr. Thao, a Vietnamese engineer and currently a member of our AI/RPA team, built an automated system for internal processes during his internship prior to joining the company. He is incredibly reliable, having implemented the system within a couple of months. He was awarded a company commendation in his first year, and has already gained prominence in the company. It's incredible, because even among Japanese recruits, it is hard to find people who understand the needs of others and can actually deliver on it as he does. He has a very promising future ahead."

LINKBAL INC.

Web Engineer Mr. Dat

He is a proactive web engineer, propelling company services jointly with the business teams
"Mr. Dat has taken on the role of web engineer for our matchmaking appliance called "CoupLink." He received N1 fluency accreditation before coming to Japan, and is really fluent in Japanese. He works in sync with business side members. He is not the type that just follows orders, but has a sense of ownership, provides helpful technical advice, and is capable of dealing with diverse matters from front-end to back-end. He is very positive, cheerful and has a positive influence on the people around him. Sun*'s matching service has a candidate list consisting of highly-skilled student users. As such, there is a higher chance you can hire capable talent, and compared to Japanese students, the process from selection to job offers is much quicker."

Brain Technology

Machine Learning Engineer in R&D team
Ms. Khanh

Came in 2nd in Vietnamese Mathematical Olympiad. Upon joining the company, has been actively contributing as a machine learning engineer in the R&D department.
"She has been working as a machine learning engineer in an R&D team aiming to create new functions from technology seeds, through a machine-learning based anomaly detection platform called "Impulse." In her student days, she was a runner-up in the Vietnamese Mathematics Olympiad, which demonstrates her excellence in Mathematics. She is also highly evaluated for her skills in establishing hypotheses and conducting analyses by her team leader who possesses a PhD. Unlike programming courses in Japanese universities, Vietnamese engineers spend 5 years to master programming and IT technology, equipping them with higher understanding and capabilities in development. I look forward to her deepening her understanding of Japanese culture and context, allowing her to further broaden her roles."
